Research & Development
Overview
The Research & Development (R&D) Division of the National Agro Foundation (NAF) serves as the scientific and technical backbone of the Foundation’s work in agriculture, natural resource management, environmental sustainability, food and nutrition, water resources, and rural development.
NAF integrates laboratory-based science, field research, geospatial technologies, remote sensing, environmental assessment, data analytics and community-level evidence to develop practical, scalable and sustainable solutions for complex challenges facing rural and agricultural systems.
Our research is designed not only to generate scientific knowledge, but also to translate that knowledge into field-level technologies, management practices, decision-support systems, technical advisory services and evidence-based development programmes.
The R&D ecosystem brings together the expertise of the Central Research Team and Laboratory Services Division, enabling NAF to connect field observations with laboratory validation, spatial analysis and impact assessment.
The Laboratory Services Division complements this work through analytical, research, consultancy, academic and training support covering soil, water, food, agriculture and environmental sciences. The laboratory is NABL accredited as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017 for soil, food, water and organic fertilizer testing and NAF holds SIRO (Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) recognition from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), renewed for 2026-2029.
NAF’s Central Research Team provides the scientific foundation for watershed development, natural resource management and rural livelihood programmes, translating satellite observations, field science and ground evidence into actionable designs and decisions.

Research & Development
Who We Are
NAF’s Research & Development function is a multidisciplinary platform that connects scientific research with development practice.
Our research teams work across the continuum of:
- Problem Identification
- Scientific Assessment
- Laboratory & Field Research
- Geospatial Analysis
- Technology/
Management Intervention - Validation
- Impact Assessment
- Knowledge Translation
This integrated approach enables NAF to address environmental and agricultural challenges from multiple scientific dimensions rather than through isolated interventions.
Our research capabilities include:
- Soil and soil-health assessment
- Soil fertility and nutrient management
- Soil biological and microbial assessment
- Soil contamination and remediation
- Biochar and bioamendment research
- Sustainable and climate-smart agriculture
- Crop and plant nutrient studies
- Food quality, safety and nutritional profiling
- Water-quality assessment
- Groundwater and watershed studies
- Remote sensing and GIS-based environmental monitoring
- Hydrological and runoff modelling
- Land degradation assessment
- Climate-risk and climate-resilience studies
- Waterbody and lake rejuvenation assessment
- Impact evaluation and evidence-based programme assessment
Research & Development
What We Do
NAF undertakes applied, multidisciplinary and field-oriented research to generate scientific evidence and develop solutions relevant to farmers, communities, industries, institutions, government programmes and development partners.
Scientific Assessment
We undertake systematic laboratory and field investigations to characterise soil, water, food, environmental and agricultural systems.
Research & Technology Development
We investigate innovative approaches including biochar-based amendments, nutrient-management technologies, biological indicators, phytoremediation, sustainable agricultural practices and food-product development.
Geospatial & Remote Sensing Research
Satellite imagery, GIS, terrain analysis and spatial modelling are used to understand vegetation, water resources, land-use dynamics, soil conditions and environmental change over time.
Laboratory Research
Our analytical capabilities support soil, water, food, organic fertilizer and environmental research through chemical, physical, biological and microbiological assessments.
Field Validation
Research findings are evaluated under real-world agricultural and environmental conditions to assess technical feasibility and practical applicability.
Data-Driven Decision Support
Scientific data are transformed into indices, maps, models, dashboards and technical recommendations that support evidence-based planning and management.
Impact Assessment
NAF combines field surveys, household-level evidence, laboratory data and geospatial information to assess changes in water access, crop productivity, farm income, land health and farming practices.
Research & Development
Our Aim
To translate scientific knowledge into sustainable solutions for people, agriculture and the environment.
NAF’s R&D activities aim to:
- 01Strengthen soil, water and ecosystem health
- 02Improve agricultural productivity through science-based resource management
- 03Develop climate-smart and resource-efficient agricultural practices
- 04Promote sustainable management of natural resources
- 05Develop scientific approaches for environmental contamination and remediation
- 06Improve food quality, safety and nutritional value
- 07Generate evidence for sustainable water and waterbody management
- 08Apply geospatial science and digital technologies for environmental decision-making
- 09Build scientific capacity among students, researchers, farmers and development professionals
- 10Convert research findings into practical technologies, advisories and development interventions
- 11Support evidence-based planning for CSR, government and institutional programmes
Our overarching objective is to bridge the gap between research and implementation, ensuring that scientific knowledge contributes to measurable improvements in agricultural systems, environmental quality and rural livelihoods.
Our Commitment
Research that Reaches the Ground
At NAF, research is not an end in itself.
We believe that scientific knowledge creates value when it can be validated, communicated and translated into practical solutions.
Through multidisciplinary research, advanced analytical capabilities, geospatial technologies and field-based validation, NAF continues to build scientific evidence for healthier soils, sustainable agriculture, safer and more nutritious food, resilient water resources and restored ecosystems.
Our R&D efforts therefore focus on connecting:
- Science↔Society
- Laboratory↔Field
- Data↔Decisions
- Innovation↔Implementation
- Research↔Rural Transformation
